Jesse Owens fouled on his first two attempts to qualify for the long-jump at the 1936 Olympic games. Just before his final attempt, Germany's Luz Long, a tall, blonde symbol of Hitler's so-called Aryan race, suggested that Owens jump from a few inches behind the takeoff board to ensure qualification. Jesse took his advice and easily qualified.
He went on to win the gold medal and Luz won silver, and the two embraced after the event. Luz later died in WWII, but Owens stayed in contact with his family.
